In the midst of the current financial crisis on Wall Street, John McCain has said that if he were President, he would fire the Chairman of the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission). That's like putting a band-aid on Wall Street. The problem here isn't Republican SEC Chairman Christopher Cox, a Bush appointee, it's the lack of regulation on Wall Street firms. Under a Republican-led congress, rules on financial transactions among large firms have only gotten looser, to the point where unsecured and irresponsible trading that runs into the billions of dollars DAILY dominates the financial landscape.
John McCain's suggestion that the SEC Chairman be fired is nothing more than grandstanding. What we need right now is responsible leadership, the kind that offers solutions from Wall Street to Main Street. John McCain is not showing that kind of leadership. But then again, when you have about as many Wall Street lobbyists on your campaign team as you do houses (7? 10? is anyone still counting?), it's probably safer to be vague.
